First successful aerial photograph made in the USA, by J. W. Black, 10/13/1860, from a balloon tethered over Boston Common. Left, the original, at the Boston Public Library. Right, a view from the same spot, same day and time, 2012. Helicopter R-22.
The Alvah Kittredge House, in Roxbury, dates from 1836. Once grand, it was almost abandoned and derelict until a recent restoration by Historic Boston, Inc. Mayor Walsh and neighborhood dignitaries attended the celebration of this work last week. Afterwards, some clean-up workers and balloons were still there. A Greek Revival classic. Preservation at work.
